Frequently Asked
Questions

FAQ

  • What is MercyShare?

MercyShare is a non-proft  legal sharing program which helps immigrants facing detention or deportation by pooling community donations and member contributions to support emergency legal fees and related needs.

  • How does legal sharing work?

MercyShare raises funds to support immigrants in crisis by helping cover legal fees when they cannot afford representation. While our member-to-member legal sharing program is launching soon, general donations are already open and active.

We begin using these donations as soon as we receive enough funding to cover at least 15 individuals in need, ensuring we can support multiple cases responsibly and equitably. This allows us to act quickly in emergency situations while maintaining financial stewardship.

As the member-to-member model rolls out, donors will also be able to contribute monthly and directly participate in a shared legal support system rooted in community, mercy, and faith.

  • Do you offer legal advice?

No. MercyShare is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. We help immigrants understand what is being asked of them by courts or their attorney's, and we connect them to affordable, trustworthy legal help when possible.

  • Who qualifies for assistance from MercyShare?

MercyShare offers two distinct programs to support immigrants in crisis, and each has its own set of eligibility criteria:

🛡️ Legal Sharing Program (Launching Soon)

This program is designed for immigrants who have entered the U.S. legally and want to proactively protect themselves and their families should they ever face a deportation proceeding.

Participants contribute monthly into the legal sharing community and are eligible for up to $10,000 in protection benefits to help cover legal fees if they are ever detained or placed in removal proceedings. This program functions similarly to a community-based safety net—sharing the burden of legal costs among committed members.

    🚨 Emergency Deportation Fund

This fund is for immigrants currently facing deportation and in immediate need of legal support. To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Are currently detained or at risk of deportation

    Cannot afford legal representation

Qualify for immigration relief or a waiver

Demonstrate a good-faith effort to meet legal obligations

Have not committed crimes of moral turpitude

Have a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (LPR) spouse or children

Each request is individually reviewed based on urgency, eligibility, financial need, and the availability of funds.

MercyShare does not provide legal advice but works closely with trusted immigration attorneys to connect qualified applicants with fair and affordable legal help.

  • Can I apply for help if I’m already working with an attorney?

Yes, as long as you meet our eligibility criteria and your attorney agrees to our guidelines for fund use, you may apply for support to help cover your legal fees. All legal grants are capped at an amount agreed to by the board.

  • How much financial help does MercyShare?

Support varies by case. MercyShare may provide up to $10,000 in legal fee assistance per eligible case, depending on urgency, need, and available funds.

  • Where does the money come from?

    MercyShare is funded through:

    • Individual and monthly donor contributions,
    • Faith-based partnerships and churches,
    • Fundraising efforts,
    • Proceeds from the MercyStore,
    • And soon, a member-to-member legal sharing program.
  • How do I apply for help from MercyShare?

Visit our “Get Help” page to complete the application form. Our team will review your request and follow up with next steps.

  • How is my donation used?

Your donation goes directly toward helping immigrants pay for legal fees during emergencies such as detention or deportation. We prioritize individuals who qualify for relief but cannot afford legal representation.

A small portion of every donation is allocated toward administrative costs to help cover the operational expenses of running the MercyShare program (such as staff time, outreach, technology, and case management). This ensures the program is sustainable, responsive, and effective in delivering help where it’s needed most.

  • Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes. MercyShare  is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All donations to MercyShare are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. You'll receive a donation receipt immediately and a year-end giving statement..

  • Can I make a recurring donation?

Absolutely! Recurring donations are a powerful way to provide consistent support. Monthly giving allows us to plan ahead, build our legal defense fund, and respond quickly to urgent needs in immigrant communities.

  • Can I see where my donation is going?

Yes. We provide regular updates on how funds are used, including success stories (with permission), case impact reports, and updates on fundraising goals. Transparency and stewardship are core to our mission.

  • Besides donating, how else can I help?

📢 Share our mission with friends, family, and church communities.
